In the summer we escape to our house in Alentejo, Portugal with its lush gardens and pond full of fish and frogs. I can sit for hours watching the fish swim about, the frogs sunbathing on the rocks and the dragonflies perched on the flora. I photographed close-ups of the dragonflies with their bright blue coloring and fantastic wings. The photos were on my mind and how could I use them. The inspiration came when a dear friend gave me a set of iron dragonfly tablecloth clips. She was going to throw them away, as they were old and oxidized and then she thought perhaps I could use them in my art. I love them – one persons’ trash is another ones gold. They had the rustic, woodsy feel I was looking for and were the foundation along with my photo for the dragonfly box.
While walking our frenchie through the forest paths I came upon a field of poppies in bloom, a beautiful carpet of red. Inspiration hit and I snapped a bunch of photos and picked some poppies to be dried. The poppy box grew from there.
My husband and I love to visit gardens. On a beautiful spring day walking through Montserrate Park in Portugal, the African Lilies were in bloom with butterflies floating about. I love how the blooms explode with bursts of purple. The next day into the art studio and the lily butterfly box creation had begun.
A dear friend always signed off emails with Love, Light, Peace. I though what a lovely mantra and searched my photo archives for images that would express these sentiments. I created photographic triptychs on canvas with the words embedded into the photos. Wanting to create something more with these inspirational words the Love, Light, Peace box emerged.
